Introduction to Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)

In Hindu sacred tradition, astrology is known as Jyotisha (Sanskrit: ज्योतिष), meaning the "science of light". It is revered as one of the six Vedangas (limbs or auxiliary disciplines of the Vedas), poetically called the "eye of the Vedas" because it provides vision into time (Kala), karma, and the cosmic order.

Unlike Western astrology, which relies on the tropical zodiac (tied to the seasons), Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac (Nirayana), which reflects the actual observable positions of the fixed stars. It integrates three fundamental cosmic pillars:

  • The 12 Rasis (Zodiac Signs): 30° divisions of the celestial ecliptic.
  • The 27 Nakshatras (Lunar Mansions): Ancient star clusters that give nuanced insight into personality, life destiny, and auspicious timing (Muhurta).
  • The 9 Grahas (Planets): Celestial cosmic forces that deliver the fruits of one's past karma (Prarabdha Karma).

The 12 Rasis (Zodiac Signs)

The 360° celestial sphere is divided into 12 equal signs of 30° each, known as Rasis. Each Rasi is governed by a ruling planet (Graha Lord), belongs to one of the four primordial elements (Tattvas: Fire, Earth, Air, Water), and possesses a unique nature (Modality: Movable, Fixed, or Dual).

The 27 Nakshatras per Rasi

The Nakshatras (lunar mansions) are the heart of Vedic astrology. The ecliptic is divided into 27 Nakshatras of 13° 20' each. Every Nakshatra is further subdivided into 4 Padas (quarters) of 3° 20' each, creating a total of 108 Padas across the zodiac (a sacred number in Hinduism representing cosmic wholeness).

Each Rasi spans exactly 30°, which corresponds to 9 Padas (2¼ Nakshatras). The table below lists the exact Nakshatras and quarters belonging to each Rasi, along with their Nakshatra Lord and traditional infant naming sounds (Namaksharas):

How Does a Vedic Chart Look? (South vs North)

In Vedic astrology, a birth horoscope (Janma Kundali / Jathagam) is represented as a geometric chart depicting the positions of the 12 houses and planets at the exact moment of birth. Across India, two major visual representations are used:

South Indian Chart Style

Fixed Signs, Moving Houses: Signs are fixed in position and read clockwise. The Ascendant (Lagna) is marked with two diagonal lines or the word "Lagna / Asc".

Meena (Pisces)
Mesha (Aries)
Vrishabha (Taurus)
Mithuna (Gemini)
Kumbha (Aquarius)
South Indian Jathagam Clockwise Direction
Karka (Cancer)
Makara (Capricorn)
Simha (Leo)
Dhanu (Sagittarius)
Vrishchika (Scorpio)
Tula (Libra)
Kanya (Virgo)

North Indian Chart Style

Fixed Houses, Moving Signs: Houses are fixed in diamonds and read counter-clockwise. The top central diamond is ALWAYS House 1 (Lagna / Ascendant).
